Nervously, Mei peered in the window of the door to room 136, her new English class. She thought her bad English would have made it obvious that she was going to need to be in some kind of English class for those who didn't speak it, but apparently, the school either didn't have one or didn't care that she belonged in it. The entire class looked rather scared of the teacher standing at the front of the room, making Mei wonder if he was evil or something.
She hesitantly opened the door and slipped into the room, handing the teacher her pass. The look on his face made her worry that she had gone to the wrong place. She took it back from him and began to back towards the room's exit. This was obviously not the right place.
Then, the man turned to the class, glaring all the while, and said unnecessarily, "Alright you slackers, quiet down! This is the new girl you've all not been expecting because you weren't listening this morning when I told you she was coming. Mei Atsuki, meet the people you will slave over English with for the rest of this year. Who would be willing to help her catch up?"
Mei stared at him in horror. She had absolutely no idea what he had just said except that he had asked for a volunteer from this terrified audience to assist her in something that she hoped she would learn the meaning of, as it seemed important to the passing of this class. When he pointed at a chair in the back of the room, she hurriedly walked down the silent aisle and slid into it. The teacher still glared at the students.
"I'm waiting," he growled, before Mei could protest that she didn't need any help. Terrified and feeling foolish, she lay her head in her hands, not looking around to see if anyone was going to volunteer for the position of her helper.

Harper was sitting in her desk in the back of the class. She hadn't been paying the slightest amount of attention. She shifted her aimless gaze to the new girl that walked in the door. Her name's Mei, huh? Nice. She hadn't known about anyone knew today, but then again she was paying about as much attention as the kid asleep beside her.
She looked over the girl and then at the class. She heard the teacher ask for helpers and to Harper's surprise the little kiss ups in the class didn't shoot hands up in the air. She smirked at the thought and then looked back to Mei. She felt kinda bad for her. She was knew and no one was jumping at the bit to help her.
Harper waited a few more seconds before realizing no one was going to help Mei. Harper sighed at the sight of her peers and their refusuals to help. Her hand went up as the teacher looked disappointed at the group. She spoke up a bit to get his attention. Harper usually didn't help much, but she was feeling rather helpful today. I'll do it.

Mei heard a voice volunteering. Looking up, she saw a girl a few seats over with her hand up in the air. The girl seemed nice enough, even if she looked reluctant to be helping the new kid. Mei wondered thoughtfully if the girl knew that she had probably bitten off more than she could chew. She smiled slightly at her (hopefully) new friend.
Taking out a sheet of paper and her favourite pen, she wrote slowly in English, making sure that her spelling was as good as it would ever be. The pen wrote in green despite being red and black on the outside, and she had bought it at the h.Naoto store in Harajuku. It had been the only thing in the store that she could afford, at 800 yen {OOC: around $7 USD}
Hi. I am Mei. I came from Japan. What is your name?
Wadding up the paper into a ball, she then glanced at the teacher, who was angrily yelling at a boy in the front row for something about not doing homework, before dramatically sneezing and throwing the note to the girl. It missed her desk and fell to the floor beside her. Mei crossed her fingers and hoped that the girl had seen it. It didn't contain anything particularly incriminating, but she was afraid of what this teacher would do if he found them passing notes.

Seeing that the teacher had acknowledged her and moved on to yell at some poor kid for not doing his homework. The guy in the desk beside her jumped and almost fell out of his chair. Harper stifled a laugh and glanced over a Mei who was smiling at Harper. Harper returned a friendly smile and then glanced to the teacher. His face red from yelling. Oh give it a rest windbag so he didn't do his homework.. Yadda Yadda Yadda.
Harper chewed thoughtfully on her pen top and took out some paper and began to draw. She wasn't sure what it was, but she'd worry about that later. Harper glanced up quickly as a note flew across her desktop and landed on the floor. Harper quickly reached over to pick it up and read it. She straightened out the paper and began to jot down a reply:
Hello Mei. My name is Harper. How is Japan? I've always wanted to go there.
Harper finished and crumpled it back up. She glanced at the teacher. His back was turned and he was scribbling something across the board about some english junk. She quickly threw the note to Mei and to Harper's amazement it landed on her desk. Harper smiled and continued on her picture keeping an eye out for stray notes.

Mei watched as the girl scribbled a response to her note. Her eyes followed the snatch of paper flying from the girl's hand to her own desk before swiftly opening it and reading the reply. It was rather a shock to realize that she could read and understand every word. Pen in hand, she wrote a reply.
Japan is good, but Japan is also bad. For foreigners, it is nice. It is hard to describe in English. I will probably lose fail this class. Do you like English class?
Chewing on the tip of her pen for a bit, she tried to think of anything else to say, as well as any words she may have used in the wrong way. She watched Harper draw for a while, trying to figure out what it was she was drawing. She didn't want to ask because that would be rude if it was supposed to be obvious. Thinking of something else to say, she went back to the note, putting more in.
I am living at Carnem Youth Hostel. Do you know anyone who stays there?[/color]
She had a vague memory of seeing the name Harper on another one of the girls' dorms there. She had no idea, however, if it was a popular name. It may well have been that there were hundreds of people with the name Harper living nearby. It would probably be awkward to ask if the girl was living there and then be proven horribly wrong.
Mei was moderately satisfied with the quality of her response, so she balled it back up. The teacher was now droning on in a monotone she'd had no idea he was even capable of, writing seemingly random words on the board, so it seemed safe to send the note back. With one last glance at the man's back, she flipped the note across the few desks, aiming for Harper's desk. It landed in the middle of her drawing. Mei hoped it hadn't smeared anything, because it had looked like a very nice drawing.

Harper ,satisfied with her throw, turned back to her picture. It had turned into a girl sitting on the edge of a cliff and that was all for now, but Harper was happy with it. She was about to put the pen to the paper when a paper ball appeared. She glanced at the teacher who wasn't even in the room. She uncrumpled the note and read Mei's writing. Harper thought about the question about english and scribbled down a reply:
I doubt you'll fail. It's pretty easy... I do pretty good in here, but the teacher is very hard and mean. Lucky us, huh? I don't know many people there yet... Do you?
Harper quickly ran a check for the teacher and quickly crumpled the note and tossed it back. It landed on her desk just as the teacher came back in. He hadn't seen the note toss. That was a change in Harper's usual luck. She sighed relief and went back to her picture trying to decide what to do next.

Mei watched as Harper responded to her note, glancing at the door every so often to check and see if the teacher was coming back in. Right when he opened the door, glancing around to see if anyone was talking (which of course, most people were), Harper threw the note back to her. Fortunately, he was too busy at that second counting copies of what was probably homework to see it. Unfolding it very quietly, she read the response, trying to take in and understand every word. Green pen in hand, she wrote a quick response.
We are not lucky about this teacher. I do not know many people there either. I hope you do well in this class. English is hard for me to speak. I am not sure I will understand what he wants us to understand.
Cautiously, she flung the note back to Harper, making sure that the teacher, who she had begun to call demon teacher in her head, was looking at someone else. Just as it was about to hit the girl's desk, he started to look in their direction.
